The Buffalo Bills have had more than a few decorated players come through One Bills Drive. Even if he wasn’t a superstar in the league, one of those men was wide receiver Robert Woods. Woods announced his retirement from the NFL, and while he signed a one-day contract with the Los Angeles Rams to retire with them, Bills Mafia will always have a special place in its heart for Woods.

After 13 seasons in the league, Woods is hanging up the cleats.

In his farewell message, he included the Buffalo Bills, among other teams, thanking them for allowing him to play the game. He added a nice little note to fans as well, and while it wasn’t a direct call out to the Bills Mafia, they should love it.

“To the Buffalo Bills, Los Angeles Rams, Tennessee Titans, Houston Texans, and Pittsburgh Steelers — thank you for giving me the opportunity to live out my dream at the highest level,” Woods wrote. “To the best fans in the world — thank you for your unwavering support, your energy, and your belief in me throughout my journey.”

Robert Woods had an excellent career with the Buffalo Bills and the Los Angeles Rams

Woods was selected by the Bills in the second round of the 2013 NFL draft, with the 41st overall pick. He played collegiately at USC and was the fifth receiver taken that year.

During his four seasons in Buffalo, he appeared in 57 games and had 203 receptions for 2,451 yards and 12 touchdowns. He added four carries for 22 yards on the ground. While the stats won’t explode off the sheet, he was a reliable target during his tenure from 2013-2016.

He played five years for the Rams from 2017 to 2021, where he really caught on fire with his game, catching 367 passes for 4,626 yards and 23 touchdowns in 68 games.

“After 27 unforgettable years of pouring my heart into this game, and 13 incredible years in the NFL — it’s time for me to step away from playing the sport that has given me everything,” Woods wrote. “Football has never just been a game to me — it has been my passion, my purpose, and my lifelong dream. I cherished every moment my cleats touched the grass. Every time I stepped onto the field, I was determined to leave a piece of myself in every snap.”

Robert Woods is an incredible human being

It’s a shame that Woods never got to connect with quarterback Josh Allen on the field; that duo would have been deadly. What a difference a few years would have made. The one thing I will say about Woods is that he was a kind person. From my personal experience with the now-retired wide receiver, he proved he’s one of the best.

During college, I was in the gym playing basketball while a Bills podcast or radio show was being set up. Woods and former linebacker Arthur Moats walked in, and Woods ended up shooting some baskets with me and a few others for a few minutes. It might seem simple, but the fact that he took time out of his day to connect with people in the community meant a lot.

As someone who grew up a Bills fan, I was doing everything I could to keep from losing it when he walked through the door. It was one of those moments I’ll never forget.

Thirteen seasons in the NFL is no small feat, and Woods earned every bit of it.

He may be retiring as a Ram, but Bills Mafia saw the foundation first. The work ethic, professionalism, and character. Players like that leave a mark far beyond the stat sheet.

Congrats on a tremendous career, Woods. Buffalo won’t forget you.
