The Dolphins’ quarterback search is getting a pleasant surprise with extra intel on a potential fit in Indianapolis
All information is good information.
The Miami Dolphins’ search for a new quarterback is just getting started.
The old guard behind center, veteran quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, appears destined for a fresh start elsewhere as Miami takes on new leadership and a new overall direction. The good news for the Dolphins is that change is probably needed, and the team’s willingness to accept that is healthy. The bad news for Miami is that their options for 2026 are, well…let’s just call them limited. But one of the candidates they could fall in love with is going to give them a good look at his ability this week at the 2026 NFL Combine. An even better look than we may have expected.
Alabama Crimson Tide quarterback Ty Simpson reportedly set to throw at 2026 NFL Combine
The decision for college quarterbacks to throw at the annual NFL Combine is becoming less and less popular for those signal callers projected to go in the early rounds. More often than not, the chance to throw only in a stable setting at a Pro Day is the preferred choice. It sounds like that will be the path for Indiana quarterback Fernando Mendoza this year. But Alabama’s Ty Simpson? Tom Pelissero of NFL Network is reporting that he will, in fact, throw this week in Indianapolis.
The draft stock for Simpson is a tough one to iron out. He’s a one-year starter and Simpson’s play generally faded down the stretch throughout the course of the 2025 college season.
There are plenty of reasons to consider Simpson an intriguing talent, but he would not be a great value for Miami at No. 11 based off of the current projections and his own lack of experience. Reaching for a need is a one-way path to disappointment in the NFL Draft — so consider Simpson a long-shot with Miami’s first pick. Could he make it to pick No. 43 overall? If he did, would the Dolphins deem that decision a “cost-effective” swing of the bat?
General manager Jon-Eric Sullivan has not shied away from his team constantly evaluating quarterbacks. Miami is expected to invest heavily at the position until they have quality play. But this week could go a long way in helping the Dolphins to determine whether or not they feel Simpson could be an answer.
Forget about the Alabama helmet. Yes, Simpson and Tagovailoa share a school. But the program Simpson has played for is different than the one Tagovailoa played for under Nick Saban. And the number one sin of scouting and player assessment is simply deciding to scout the helmet. If you want to have concerns with Ty Simpson, they should be rooted in modest size, struggles to hit throws down the field, and a lack of experience that makes him a high-variance outcome at the NFL level.
We won’t know where Miami’s feelings on the quarterback will come in until we see how they handle however many picks they have with Simpson on the board. Either way, expect this week to be a big piece of the puzzle in forming that opinion. In a year with limited options, getting all the information possible on the candidates they do have should be considered a good thing.
