Where the Cleveland Browns decide to go to add competition to their quarterback room is an important part of their offseason.

Shedeur Sanders and Deshaun Watson will get a chance to battle for the job, but the Browns are either going to bring in another veteran or a rookie to compete for the job.

Browns head coach Todd Monken’s days at the college football level give him a connection to some players who have recently entered the NFL. One quarterback set to be drafted in April has already played for Monken.

Carson Beck makes a strong statement about Browns QB Carson Beck.

Georgia’s Carson Beck played at Georgia from 2020 through 2024 and crossed over with Monken there his first three seasons. Beck knew Monken way before the time in Athens.

“I had Coach Monken my first three years at Georgia and I love him personally,” Beck said on Friday. “I have actually known him since I was seven or eight years old whenever he was the wide receivers coach with the Jags.”

Beck went on to speak about their time at Georgia more.

“I’ve been able to have a really good relationship with him over the years and obviously at Georgia, he taught me a lot of what I know. He’s an amazing coach,” Beck stated. I had the opportunity to talk with him the other day when I was done with all my interviews. We walked and chatted for a little bit. I love Coach Monk, he’s an awesome coach and a great guy.”

Beck’s best season at Georgia was in 2023 when he had 3,941 passing yards, 24 touchdowns, and six interceptions. Beck threw 28 touchdowns to 12 interceptions the next season and he transferred to Miami for 2025. After a shaky 2024, Beck led Miami to the national championship game where they fell to Indiana. Beck raised his stock into as early as a third-round pick in a season he tossed 30 touchdowns.

Bringing in a rookie feels less likely than a veteran option, but it’s still a possibility for the Browns. If the Browns want to take a quarterback it’ll be on Day 2 or Day 3.

Cleveland has had a formal meeting with the 6-foot-4 quarterback and he could be an option for the Browns given the familiarity with Monken.
