‘I don’t know the list is all that long’ — NFL insider clarifies the Minnesota Vikings’ plans at the quarterback position
We still don’t know what the Minnesota Vikings will do at quarterback.
The only thing that we know about the Minnesota Vikings’ plans in free agency is that they will be adding at least one player at the quarterback position.
Head coach Kevin O’Connell made it clear in his season-ending press conference that competition was needed due to the lack of success from J.J. McCarthy, Carson Wentz, and Max Brosmer. There have been a lot of quarterbacks who have been linked to the Vikings over the last two months, but nobody really knows who the Vikings will target.
Adam Schefter provides clarity on Minnesota Vikings quarterback search
With free agency just one week away, there are going to be a lot of moving parts that factor into the decision. ESPN’s Adam Schefter joined the Pat McAfee show to talk about multiple topics, and they spent some time on the Vikings, and he provided some interesting tidbits. McAfee laid the groundwork for the conversation.
“Felt like from all the conversations I had around the combine, and obviously you’re having some similar not just with Vikings people, but like people around the NFL, the Minnesota Vikings are looking for any quarterback that can layer a football,” said McAfee.
“I think they’re looking at a veteran,” said Schefter. “Kyler [Murray] would be one option. Geno Smith, if the Raiders decide to release him, would be another option. Daniel Jones [will be] very pricey. I don’t know if they can get it done, but in a perfect world, that would be a great option for the Vikings. You can bring up both, but I don’t know that the list is all that long, but clearly, they’re going to be adding to that quarterback room here in the next week or two.”
The interesting thing here from Schefter is the idea of Jones. There haven’t been a lot of discussions about him because the idea is the Indianapolis Colts will be finding a way to keep him. If they don’t, the Vikings do make a lot of sense. He was on the team at the end of the 2024 season with the idea that they would keep him as the backup/bridge starter for McCarthy.
Murray would only make sense from a financial standpoint, as his height isn’t there, nor is his ability to throw over the middle. Smith only does if he gets cut, and that is certainly likely with Fernando Mendoza coming in. The Seahawks did trade him once Klint Kubiak got hired. Schefter also mentioning that the list being short is peculiar as well.
What will the Vikings do? Only time will tell.
