Former Tennessee Vols coach knows he’s getting fired at the end of the season and he took a shot at his rumored replacement
Former Tennessee Vols assistant coach Kim English is in a weird situation right now.
Former Tennessee Vols assistant coach Kim English is in a bizarre situation right now.
English, who is in his third season as the head coach at Providence, is reportedly going to be fired at the end of the season.
Following Providence’s loss to Georgetown on Saturday night, English downplayed reports that he’s out at the end of the season.
English landed the job at Providence after spending two seasons as the head coach at George Mason. The former Missouri guard was a popular assistant at Tennessee under Rick Barnes from 2019 to 2021.
Kim English takes subtle shot at his rumored replacement
There are rumors that Saint Louis head coach Josh Schertz is Providence’s top target to replace English.
After speaking to the media Saturday night, English threw some subtle shade at Schertz by quickly mentioning George Mason’s 86-57 win over Saint Louis earlier in the afternoon.
English reportedly said, “How about them Patriots?” as he left the post-game press conference.
College basketball reporter Karl Heiser, who was at Capital One Arena to cover the game between Providence and Georgetown, documented the comments.
English is no stranger to trolling or throwing shade, so it’s not the least bit surprising that he took a shot at his rumored replacement.
And really, I don’t blame him. That’s not to say Providence is wrong for wanting to move on from English — the results haven’t been what anyone expected — but having a report leak that he’s getting fired at the end of the season while still expecting him to finish the season seems a bit disrespectful.
It’s a business at the end of the day, and feelings don’t get much consideration when making a coaching change, but Providence clearly could have handled this situation a bit more professionally.
