Vikings interim GM Rob Brzezinski confirms suspicion on the fanbase’s theory, and it’s not what anyone wants to hear
It’s been staring us in the face the entire time.
The first few days of free agency haven’t been very eventful for the Minnesota Vikings, and it shouldn’t be much of a surprise.
They did sign quarterback Kyler Murray to a one-year contract on Thursday afternoon, but the only other signing was cornerback James Pierre. Now, they have made a multitude of other moves, including getting running back Aaron Jones and tight end T.J. Hockenson to take pay cuts and re-signing both linebacker Eric Wilson and special teams ace Tavierre Thomas.
Rob Brzezinski confirms the Vikings’ slow offseason
One of the big criticisms among the fanbase about the Vikings’ free agency thus far has been the quiet nature of their process. Teams across the NFL have made some pretty smart signings across the board, and the Vikings haven’t been as active as many believed they should be.
Interim general manager Rob Brzezinski spoke to the media after Murray’s initial press conference introducing him to the media, and he was happy with what they have done thus far.
“I feel like we’ve navigated responsibly the future [and] being competitive this year. And I feel like we’re in a really good spot, but like we keep saying, there’s a long way to go.”
As much as this may hurt to hear, it’s not a surprise that they have gone with this approach. Brzezinski said as such at the NFL Scouting Combine, and there have been plenty of hints that the Wilf’s aren’t willing to spend a lot of cash this season. Remember, with the contract restructures, all of that money was already in escrow.
Plus, the Vikings right now only have around $9 million in salary cap space before either the post-June 1st cut of defensive tackle Jonathan Allen hits the salary cap or a trade of edge rusher Jonathan Greenard happens. They will need $15 million-ish for their NFL Draft class, practice squad, and in-season signings.
The frustrating part for the fanbase is the Vikings are essentially running it back this season without any major changes. Losing Allen, Jalen Nailor, and Javon Hargrave aren’t nothing losses, but the entire core of the team remains the same.
They still need to add multiple players to field a competitive roster at multiple positions this year, and there will be more signings. However, don’t expect that to come in the form of top-tier players. It’ll be more like the Shaquill Griffin’s of the world.
