The Kansas City Chiefs’ 2025 season was one to forget. After struggling to stay above .500 for most of the year, the final nail in the coffin came when star quarterback Patrick Mahomes suffered an ACL tear in December, ending his season, and what was left of Kansas City’s.

Since then, there have been reports that Patrick Mahomes has attacked his recovery with a blistering pace after Charles Goldman of A to Z Sports Kansas City interviewed an orthopeideic surgeon who explained that the first 4-6 weeks would be the toughest for Mahomes. Well, that window passed a while ago, but little has been seen of the superstar. That changed in a big way on Wednesday.

Patrick Mahomes releases a video of himself throwing

This is obviously a major development in the rehab process for Mahomes, who is not only weight-bearing, but taking actual dropbacks and throwing the football a little over three months after he suffered the tear.

It’s safe to say that him being this far along in his rehabilitation bodes well for his ability to return Week 1, which was something that had long been questioned or unknown, even by the Chiefs themselves.

“Yeah, we’ll cross that as we go,” Andy Reid told reporters, back in December. “Brett (Veach) thinks of everything. I mean, he jumps in on it, and he’s well ahead of all of it. So, I’m not worried about it, that part of it. And then Pat (Mahomes), you never know on these rehabs how they go. I just know he’s got good people that he’ll be working with, and I know how aggressive he is on things. And you know, as long as the surgery goes well and as expected, then I would expect a fairly quick recovery for him just because of those factors.”

Why the Chiefs should feel confident about their quarterback situation

Kansas City made a bit of a splash when it traded for Justin Fields from the New York Jets. Some took that as a sign that Mahomes may not be ready for Week 1, but between his mentality and the video released, he seems to be well ahead of schedule.

Still, if he’s unable to go early in the season, the Chiefs have a capable starter, and they will have a motivated Mahomes rearing to go.
