Details make Eagles’ trade for a veteran quarterback look even smarter
The Eagles were smart to make the deal.
The Philadelphia Eagles sparked some intriguing during free agency recently when they acquired veteran quarterback Andy Dalton in a trade from the Carolina Panthers. The move sounded some possible alarms for the future of young backup Taner McKee.
On the other hand, as more contract and trade details emerge, the more it may make a lot of sense for Philly. It wasn’t a costly move, and Dalton provides one of the highest floors in the league for a backup QB.
Panthers retained salary on Andy Dalton
According to Spotrac, the Panthers retained $2 million of Dalton’s salary in order to make the deal with the Eagles happen.
That created a tad bit more upside and flexibility with the move for the Birds.
$1.5 million for your backup QB, who has legitimate starting experience and strong leadership ties, is a great get.
Howie Roseman has consistently found ways to find value in trades over the years, and this is the latest example when you look at it from a financial standpoint. While the future of McKee is a bit murkier now, they don’t have to trade him. They could keep the three quarterbacks, with one of them being the emergency option on game days.
McKee seems like the odd man out and the top option for that role, simply because of the finagling with Dalton’s deal that led to this trade getting completed. Both sides found a way to make it happen.
For the Eagles, they are hoping that Jalen Hurts stays healthy enough to make the trade a bit of a moot point, though.
