The Eagles have the perfect opportunity to bring back one familiar face before the regular season
General manager Howie Roseman should sign Zach Ertz to bolster tight end depth behind Dallas Goedert.
The Philadelphia Eagles need to bring Zach Ertz back. I know some people might look at this and say he’s past his prime, but I think signing Ertz is the right move for this roster on multiple levels. He’s a leader, he still has something left in the tank, and he deserves to retire as an Eagle.
Ertz still has game, and the Eagles need the insurance
We saw what Ertz did last year with Washington before the ACL injury. He’s not going to go out there and put up 100 catches, nobody is expecting that. But Zach Ertz can still be a capable player when you put him in the right role. He knows how to run routes, he knows how to find soft spots in a zone, and he’s been one of the most reliable tight ends in Eagles history. You don’t just lose all of that overnight.
Now, Dallas Goedert is the guy. We all know that. The Eagles fought to keep him around, and when he’s healthy, he’s one of the better tight ends in the NFL. But what happens if Goedert goes down early in the season? Philadelphia drafted tight end Eli Stowers in the second round, and he’s the future, but he hasn’t really come around just yet. That’s the reality. So if you’re the Eagles’ front office, why wouldn’t you add a veteran presence who can step in and keep things steady if the worst-case scenario plays out?
A legend who deserves to finish where it started
Beyond the football side of it, Ertz is just a really good person to have in your locker room. He’s a great leader. The young guys on this roster would benefit from being around a player who has been through everything in Philadelphia, from the Super Bowl run to the highs and lows that came after. That kind of presence matters, especially on a team with championship expectations.
And honestly, Ertz deserves to retire as an Eagle. He’s a legend with this organization in my eyes. The guy gave everything he had during his time here, and bringing him back on a low-cost deal to close out his career in midnight green just feels right. It’s good business and it’s good karma.
If I’m the Eagles, I’m making this call. Bring Zach Ertz home, shore up the tight end room, and give a franchise legend the ending he earned.
