Panthers just got an ideal trade opportunity that could fill a big position of need and bring more clarity to the 2026 NFL Draft plans

The Carolina Panthers can take a potential swing on a top nickel cornerback before the 2026 NFL Draft even begins and help clear up the plans for the draft itself without giving up much in return.

The Carolina Panthers have put themselves into a great situation going into the 2026 NFL Draft with the work that general manager Dan Morgan did during the free agency period attacking multiple top needs on the roster.

There was, however, one need the Panthers didn’t address on the defensive side of the ball. During free agency, the Panthers were heavily rumored to be in the market for a starting-caliber nickel to give the team an upgrade over Chau Smith-Wade.

After not being able to find a free agent at the right price at the position, the Panthers now plan to turn their attention to the draft to find the ideal upgrade. That is, until an ideal trade opportunity presented itself on Friday.

Indianapolis Colts allow CB Kenny Moore II to seek a trade, and the price should be of interest to Carolina

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported on Friday morning that the Indianapolis Colts and slot cornerback Kenny Moore II have agreed to mutually seek out a trade. Moore has been with the Colts for nine years and the team plans to turn to a young option at the position while hoping to land 2026 draft capital for the 30-year-old defensive back.

Moore was a Pro Bowl selection back in 2021 but has consistently been one of the top slot cornerbacks in the league on a yearly basis. In 2025, Moore totaled 55 tackles (his fewest since his rookie year in 2017) with one interception and 1.5 sacks.

The Panthers are well aware of what kind of player Moore is after watching him have two pick-sixes in the same game against Carolina back in 2023. The acquiring team would have to take on $10 million in non-guaranteed money for 2026. So, to make such a move, the Panthers would first have to free up cap space via restructures.

Because of that, Panthers might just prefer a younger option to take over the nickel role, such as Arizona’s Treydan Stukes in the second-round. However, the draft is a risky business and there’s not a guarantee a player like Stukes will be available for the Panthers outside of the first-round.

The price is what makes things more appealing for the Panthers. The Colts are reportedly seeking 2026 draft capital and it’s unlikely they get anything higher than a fourth-round pick. If I was Dan Morgan, I would offer a 2026 fourth-round (119th overall) and 2026 fifth-round (158th overall) for Moore and not look back. A return that was accepted by our A to Z Sports Indianapolis writer Destin Adams after fielding seven different trade packages.

How a Kenny Moore II trade could impact the rest of the draft for the Panthers

Carolina is widely expected to draft an offensive weapon for quarterback Bryce Young with the 19th overall pick in the first-round, with that weapon being either a top wide receiver or the top tight end in Kenyon Sadiq.

If the Panthers go the wide receiver or safety route in the first-round (such as Dillon Thieneman), ESPN’s Jordan Reid noted the team is high on Georgia tight end Oscar Delp in the second-round. Another second-round option the team is high on is Texas Tech linebacker Jacob Rodriguez.

If the Panthers give up Day 3 capital for Kenny Moore II and fill that need at the slot cornerback spot, I could see the Panthers then sliding back in the first-round to recoup picks and still land one of the top wide receivers.

To me, this is a rare trade opportunity that can line up with the rest of the team’s draft plans while coming away with one of the top slot defenders in the league. It’s a move certainly worth at least checking in on to get a feel for the price.
