The Oklahoma Sooners have the No. 1 recruiting class for 2027 right now. They can extend that with the addition of a three-star wide receiver in Michigan. Charles “Tre” Britton III is a top-100 WR in the class. He has listed his top three schools as OU, Michigan, and Missouri.

The Sooners would be taking a recruit from a powerful program’s region, as Michigan needs to strengthen its wide receiver group. Currently, the Sooners are making strong progress with Britton.

“It went really well; I had a lot of great talks with Coach Jones and Coach Venables,” Britton told OU Insider. “So it was great coming back down there. I should be [taking] my OV there May 29th through the 31st. I ended up canceling Alabama, so Michigan, Missouri, and Oklahoma will be my three OV’s for the summer. [That’s] my top three.”

The Sooners are losing the race for Britton, but making a lasting impression

This isn’t really a three-horse race at this stage, as Missouri seems to be leading by a significant margin for the 5’10, 170-pound receiver. Michigan has hosted Britton the most to date, with four visits. Missouri has hosted him three times, and Oklahoma has hosted him once, but he has an upcoming official visit to Oklahoma at the end of May. Previous visits and upcoming trips will likely influence his decision-making, especially given how official visits in Norman have influenced recruits in the past.

“Off the field, it’s a different brotherhood,” Britton said. “They feel like they can go to the national championship. The intensity in the room is really high. The competitive nature that Coach Venables brings to the locker room — everyone’s competitive. They all want to rip each other’s heads off in practice. That’s what you want to see out of a football team; that’s how you win games. So Coach Venables is doing a great job out there. And when I was on the field, they made sure that if they were practicing right in front of me, they had me right there with all the guys. So that meant a lot to me, because that means they feel as if I should be there.

“I had a nice conversation with Coach Venables as well. He knows I can play there; he told me that countless times. I’ve had a lot of intimate conversations with him. Every time I talk to him, it’s a deep conversation. It’s nothing vague; we get in-depth every single time. So the [bond] I have with him is special at Oklahoma.”

The Sooners are not out of the fight at this stage of Britton’s recruitment. They could still win his commitment, as Britton is a player who has game-breaking speed and agility—a three-star recruit worth pursuing even with three wide receivers already committed to Oklahoma’s 2027 class. The next few months, along with the impact of upcoming visits, will be critical to his decision.
