Tennessee football is in real danger of losing a key Vols legacy player to one of UT’s most hated SEC rivals

Josh Heupel and the Tennessee Volunteers are in serious danger of losing a 2027 four-star recruit, who is the son of a former UT linebacker, to one of their top SEC rivals.

A little over a month ago, 247Sports recruiting insider Tom Loy reported that the Tennessee Vols felt good about their chances of landing 2027 four-star linebacker Kenneth Simon II.

Loy, however, also noted that Alabama “fully expects [Simon] to eventually land in Tuscaloosa.”

Simon, 6-foot-2/210 pounds from Brentwood, TN, is the son of former Vols linebacker Kevin Simon.

The younger Simon is rated by 247Sports as the No. 7 linebacker in the nation and the No. 6 player in the state of Tennessee.

On3’s Bama Online reported this week that Alabama is “trending heavily” with Simon.

Additionally, Bama Online’s Andrew Bone placed a prediction on Tuesday for Alabama to land the four-star linebacker.

“I have dropped an RPM (official prediction) for Simon to join the Crimson Tide’s class,” wrote Bone. “The wait is on as to when Simon will announce his commitment, but Alabama appears to be in a strong position as of now.”

Bone also noted that Simon’s decision “could come down to the Crimson Tide and the Bulldogs despite the family ties (to Tennessee).”

Simon visited Georgia in March.

New Vols defensive coordinator Jim Knowles and linebackers coach William Inge have worked hard to sell Simon on Tennessee’s new defense over the last couple of months.

“Defensive coordinator Jim Knowles has made a strong impression on Simon,” reported On3’s Chad Simmons in January. “The scheme fits his skill set, and the two have spent significant time together breaking things down. Linebackers coach William Inge has also played a key role, with sources noting that the family is comfortable with him. Simon and Tennessee remain high on each other’s boards as things currently stand.”

Tennessee has done all it can in this recruiting battle. Ultimately, though, Simon has to make the choice that he feels is best for his career. And right now, the signs point to that choice being Alabama. But you never know in recruiting — the Vols certainly aren’t giving up in this battle.
