The “why” behind many of the Miami Dolphins‘ defensive selections in the 2026 NFL Draft is quite evident. This team wants to be versatile and multiple on the defensive side of the football. The ambiguity that can come with athletic linebackers and edge defenders who can play in space is massive — and Miami has more of it now than they did a few weeks back.

One such pick, linebacker Kyle Louis, has the potential to be a truly unique defensive weapon. And he received a fascinating comparison this morning from the man who picked him to play for the Dolphins, general manager Jon-Eric Sullivan.

“Kyle Louis is a very versatile player who fills a big nickel role…you can put Louis at the big nickel a lot like we used (Packers safety) Javon Bullard in Green Bay. And then he can slide into the WILL backer in sub. Again, we got a lot of really good football players that are multiple and can do different things.”

Louis is a delightful talent and one of my favorite picks from this class for Miami. And the Sullivan callout for Bullard is an instructive one. Louis has approximately 25 pounds on Bullard but the usage can be quite similar. Bullard has nearly 900 snaps in the slot and just short of 300 snaps on the second level as a sub-package (DIME) linebacker. Louis, which a bit more mass, could probably take a bit higher workload in the core.

But toughness. Twitchy transitions. Dynamic hitting ability. Good eyes and great instincts. Both players share that common ground, which should have Miami Dolphins fans looking back at Bullard’s last two seasons in Green Bay to explore the Bullard role. It’s one Miami apparently sees in the future of their new defensive chess piece, too.
