Caleb Downs is a Dallas Cowboys and the idea of him on the defense is an exciting one. His comment to Matt Patricia is only going to raise that hype.

The Dallas Cowboys couldn’t have hoped for the 2026 NFL Draft board to begin how it did with the first 10 selections. Dallas knew they wanted to add an impact defender all along to Christian Parker’s new look defense, and they made it happen by taking Ohio State’s Caleb Downs

Downs is going to be a chess piece for the Cowboys’ defense and it’s the perfect kind of talent to insert in Parker’s first year in Dallas. The pick is a bit sweeter because it sounds a lot like Downs was prepared to be a Cowboy.

Caleb Downs’ interaction with Matt Patricia says it all for the new member of the Cowboys

Former Detroit Lions head coach and current Ohio State defensive coordinator Matt Patricia can be quite the brain behind a dangerous defense. He did it with Downs last season in Columbus, and his conversation with the Dallas safety right after was made a Cowboy is promising for Dallas in Year 1.

“The Eagles defense,” Downs said. “Now we know it.”

“We talked about it last night,” Patricia stated. “You know it. Talked to Schotty about it last night. You’re ready to go.”

That to me sounds a lot like Downs has already been looking into some of what Dallas is going to do under Parker. The Cowboys’ defensive coordinator was with the Eagles in 2024 and 2025 as the defensive pass game coordinator, which fits right into Downs being in the secondary.

Downs is going to start out as the nickel for Parker’s defense and likely work his way around from there. With the slot being such an important position in today’s game, the Ohio State product has a chance to be a great value there in Year 1. From there, it would be no surprise for Downs to end up being a Swiss Army Knife for the Cowboys’ defense.

There’s no surprise Downs was already looking into how he fits with Parker’s system ahead of the draft. He has a brilliant football IQ and is a student of the game. Those are both parts of him as a player you can bet Dallas fans will end up being thankful for down the road.
