ESPN hits Dallas Cowboys’ first round pick Caleb Downs with a label that every single draft prospect wants to have
Caleb Downs has a bright future with the Cowboys and the fact he was picked at No. 11 only increases the value of the selection. It also helped earn him a sought-after label from one of ESPN’s top draft analysts.
Caleb Downs is easily considered the crown jewel of the Dallas Cowboys’ 2026 draft class and it’s easy to see why.
The kid has All-Pro potential and we’re talking multiple, not just a one-off or anything like that. He’s one of the smartest, if not smartest, players in the class and he has all the necessary traits to round out his game in both pass coverage and run defense.
And the best part is Caleb Downs was projected by many to go as high as fifth overall to the New York Giants, yet he fell into the Cowboys’ lap at No. 11 overall.
So, here we are now, a few days after the draft and all of the above prompted ESPN draft analyst Matt Miller to label Downs as the best pick of the entire 2026 NFL Draft:
“My favorite pick of the draft, Downs will be an immediate playmaker in new defensive coordinator Christian Parker’s scheme. A three-time All-American and a national champion, Downs’ work ethic and culture-setting ability are as important as his on-field skills.
“He has football savvy and a great feel for the game, which gives him alignment versatility and will allow him a faster acclimation than most rookies. The expectation is that he’ll become a high-end starter with All-Pro potential during his rookie contract.
“The combination of player, need and value made this the best pick of the 2026 draft.”

Caleb Downs adds such a unique element to Christian Parker’s defense
A to Z Dallas’ Mauricio Rodriguez quickly pointed out how much of a fit Downs is for Parker’s new-look defense after the pick:
“In Downs, the Cowboys are getting a player with All-Pro written all over him, and he’s a perfect fit for new defensive coordinator Christian Parker. In the pre-draft process, Downs was widely regarded as the smartest player of the class. That alone makes him a perfect candidate to become an immediate communicator in Parker’s multiple defense.
“More than that, Downs plays like a missile near the box. Though slightly undersized, he’s fast and physical, and he’s one of the best tacklers in the class. He can do it all: Defend the run, cover, and run sideline to sideline. He played several positions for Nick Saban and Matt Patricia, and he could be a nickel, box safety, or free safety for the Cowboys.
“Paired with another versatile DB like Jalen Thompson, the Cowboys defense just got a lot more fun to watch.”
The biggest key is Downs played under former NFL defensive coordinator Matt Patricia. Say what you want to say about Patricia’s time as head coach of the Detroit Lions, but the guy helped draw up some impressive game plans during his time with the New England Patriots.
His defense is as “pro ready” as it gets and as we saw last year – he put a damn good defense on the field. In all, Downs could easily turn out to be the best pick of the draft and the Cowboys will obviously be much better off for it if he does.
