The Kansas City Chiefs selected a pair of college teammates from LSU in the 2026 NFL Draft. With their first pick in Round 1, they snagged a lockdown cornerback in Mansoor Delane. With their final pick in Round 7, K.C. drafted their first quarterback since Patrick Mahomes in Garrett Nussmeier.

Over the weekend at rookie minicamp, the pair were reunited in Kansas City for their first NFL practices together. Together, the pair is bringing some of that patented SEC toughness to the Chiefs’ practices.

  • CB Mansoor Delane (2026 NFL Draft: Round 1, Pick 6)

LSU teammates Mansoor Delane and Garrett Nussmeier discuss their NFL reunion in Kansas City

Asked what Chiefs fans can expect from Nussmeier, Delane kept it real about what Kansas City is getting. It all starts with the intangibles he brings.

“I say (he’s) just a leader – as big as anything,” Delane said. “I think – obviously he’s (Garrett Nussmeier) a rookie now, but just his leadership skills and off the field skills, and he’s a competitor.”

Nussmeier and Delane only spent one season together at LSU in 2025. Delane transferred in from Virginia Tech. One season was more than enough time for the two to get acquainted in practice. It was a true iron-sharpening-iron situation in Baton Rouge, despite Nussmeier’s injury struggles last season.

Asked about having a familiar face in Delane in Kansas City, Nussmeier said exactly what you’d expect. Praise from a quarterback who has all the respect in the world for an elite cornerback.

“Yeah, it’s been cool,” Nussmeier said. “I know I probably won’t throw it his (Monsoor Delane) way in these practices (smiles) but – no, I’m just kidding. It’ll be just like practice at LSU. He’s a great player (and) it’s been cool to have him around to get to have a familiar face, for sure.”

Of course, Nussmeier also has a familiar face on offense to lean on in UDFA OL Josh Thompson. He was the starting right guard for LSU in 2025 and didn’t allow a sack all season. Nussmeier wasn’t asked about Thompson, but they will spend plenty of time together on the practice field this offseason.
