Kansas City Chiefs WR Rashee Rice violates the conditions of his probation, set to serve 30 days in jail during OTAs, mandatory minicamp
Kansas City Chiefs WR Rashee Rice is in trouble again, this time for violating the terms of his probation. He’s set to miss time this offseason while serving a 30-day jail sentence.
Editor’s Note: This is a developing story.
Kansas City Chiefs WR Rashee Rice is in trouble with the law again.
According to KSHB-TV’s Matt Foster, Rice has violated the terms of his probation stemming from his 2024 highway racing incident. The conditions of the probation were violated after Rice tested positive for THC. He’s been ordered by the 194th Judicial District of Dallas County, Texas, to serve 30 days in jail beginning on May 19, 2026.
Rice has since been taken into custody to serve his jail time. The criminal trial docket states he will not be released until June 16, 2026. That means he would miss both of the Chiefs’ voluntary OTA sessions (May 26-29 and June 1-3) and a mandatory minicamp from June 9-11.
Rice was initially ordered to serve 30 days in jail as part of his guilty plea to two third-degree felony charges. That was to be served at his discretion during the term of his probation. This order essentially takes that discretion away. He will not need to serve an additional 30-day jail sentence afterward.
What exactly does this situation mean for Chiefs WR Rashee Rice in 2026?
The NFL recently announced that Rice would not be suspended for a separate incident regarding allegations from a former girlfriend. This incident could expose Rice to the possibility of a suspension, though. Players can no longer be suspended for positive marijuana tests under the NFL’s Substance Abuse Policy. The fact that this is tied to an off-field legal incident and will end with him serving jail time could trigger the league’s personal conduct policy once again.
Rice was suspended under the personal conduct policy for six games at the start of the 2026 NFL season. This suspension came from his involvement in the crash in Dallas, Texas, that led to his probation in the first place. He was reinstated by the NFL from suspension in Week 7 of 2025.
Unfortunately, it was not the season he hoped for. Rice was placed on injured reserve ahead of the team’s Week 17 game against the Denver Broncos due to a concussion. He has recorded 156 career receptions for 1,797 receiving yards and 14 touchdowns since entering the league in 2023. He’s played in just 28 career games across three seasons.
Rice could be fined for missing the Chiefs’ mandatory minicamp while he serves his jail time. Ultimately, he’s starting off the 2026 NFL season, which is a contract year, on the wrong foot.
