Minnesota Vikings have fascinating quarterback decision ahead of them outside of Kyler Murray and J.J. McCarthy
Quarterback is the most important position on a football team, and the Minnesota Vikings have been linked to another talented player.
The discussion surrounding the Minnesota Vikings this summer is going to be on the quarterback position. Kyler Murray and J.J. McCarthy are going to be battling for the starting job, and it’s going to be a dominant talking point.
What that competition and the 2026 season will hopefully show is the future at quarterback. McCarthy was expected to be that guy when the Vikings selected him 10th overall in the 2024 NFL Draft. After just 10 starts in his first 35 eligible games, that has become less of a certainty.
Within the context of the quarterback battle, there remains the variable of who will start in 2027? There is a unique way for the Vikings to acquire their future starter that hasn’t been discussed.
Minnesota Vikings QB Battle
- Kyler Murray comes to the Vikings on a one-year contract after seven seasons with the Arizona Cardinals.
- J.J. McCarthy has only played in 10 of a possible 35 games due to injury.
- Kevin O’Connell and the Vikings have said this is a genuine competition, but only time will tell if that is the case.
Minnesota Vikings could be interested in Brendan Sorsby
The supplemental draft hasn’t been utilized in the last few years, with the last selection being in 2019, when the Arizona Cardinals used a fifth-round pick on safety Jalen Thompson. Overall, 46 players have been selected, with quarterbacks being six of those. There hasn’t been a quarterback selected since 2011, when the Las Vegas Raiders selected Terrelle Pryor of the Ohio State Buckeyes.
This year, there could be another quarterback entering the supplemental in Brendan Sorsby of the Texas Tech Red Raiders. He is currently dealing with gambling accusations from his time with the Indiana Hoosiers in 2022 and may not play this season. If he does enter, the Vikings could be interested, with The Athletic’s Jeff Howe stating that they could be the floor for Sorsby in round three.
No one has an extra second-round pick in 2027, but the Vikings, Kansas City Chiefs and Jacksonville Jaguars each have an additional third-rounder. If Sorsby were still available in the third round of a supplemental draft, interested teams might feel compelled at that point to make a bid, recognizing the Vikings could be his floor. That could also be a factor for teams in the second round.

The idea of taking a quarterback in the supplemental draft is a fascinating one, especially with Sorsby dealing with gambling issues. That is something which could haunt him down the line.
Outside of the reason why he’s entering, the talent is certainly there. Sorsby has plus arm talent and enough mobility to create outside of structure. If he had come out in this year’s NFL Draft, there was a good chance he gets selected over Ty Simpson, who went 13th to the Los Angeles Rams.
The Vikings making him a priority in the supplemental draft would almost certainly mean the end of McCarthy in Minnesota. Is it their smartest bet? Your mileage may vary, but for a third-round pick, it’s a smart play if it comes to fruition, and they could possibly get a similar pick for McCarthy.
