National media outlet ranks top 100 players in college football and only two Tennessee players made the cut, and no Vols are in top 60
The Tennessee Volunteers don’t have any players ranked among the top 60 players in college football according to the latest national rankings from On3. The Vols only have two players ranked inside the top 100.
On3 ranked the top 100 players in college football as we enter the summer months and only two Tennessee Vols players made the cut.
Penn State transfer EDGE Chaz Coleman is ranked at No. 63 while redshirt sophomore wide receiver Braylon Staley is ranked No. 86.
Coleman’s ranking is based more on potential as he had just six tackles and one sack as a true freshman for the Nittany Lions last season.
Staley, on the other hand, made the top 100 after he enjoyed a breakout season last fall, catching 68 passes for 837 yards and six touchdowns. He’ll headline the Vols’ wide receiver group in 2026, along with junior Mike Matthews.
What is Chaz Coleman’s status at Tennessee?
There’s been some uncertainty this spring concerning Coleman’s status with the Volunteers.
The Penn State transfer has been dealing with some off-the-field stuff which kept him away from the team at times during the spring.
Tennessee’s players report for summer workouts on May 25 and all eyes will be on Coleman and whether he shows up.
The good news for the Vols is that the general feeling is that Coleman will be with the team this summer.
“The eyes will be on Chaz Coleman next week when Tennessee reconvenes for the start of summer workouts,” said VolQuest’s Austin Price this week on WNML’s Josh and Swain. “Everybody’s still out and about doing their own thing. They’ll get in town late this weekend. And then summer workouts with (strength coach) Derek Owings will begin early next week.
“As we sit here at 1:48 pm ET on Wednesday (May 20), I’ll just be shocked if he’s not back out there. I think there’s been some positive momentum there behind the scenes for the last several weeks. So I’m [willing to guess] he’s going to be there next week. Maybe I’ll be shocked, but that’s where I’m going as we sit here on Wednesday.”
Tennessee needs Coleman on the field this fall for the Vols’ defense to be at its best. It sounds like it’s trending in that direction, but we’ll have a better idea of Coleman’s status next week when players report for summer workouts.
