Vols insider shares the latest on Tennessee EDGE Chaz Coleman and whether he’s expected to report with the rest of the team next week

There’s been some concern on Rocky Top this spring about Tennessee Volunteers EDGE Chaz Coleman, a Penn State transfer, and whether he’ll be part of the UT football program in the fall.

What’s the latest with Tennessee Vols EDGE Chaz Coleman?

That’s been a popular question on Rocky Top this spring.

The Penn State transfer has been dealing with some off-the-field stuff that kept him away, at times, from the team during spring practice.

(CBS Sports’ Chris Hummer did a great job of detailing Coleman’s situation, which you can read here.)

“At the end of the day, he’s dealing with some things and has to work through those things,” said Vols head coach Josh Heupel recently when asked about Coleman. “When he’s able to do that, then he will be back with us.”

Vols insider shares the latest on Chaz Coleman

Tennessee’s football team is scheduled to begin summer workouts on May 25, and all eyes will be on whether Coleman reports.

VolQuest’s Austin Price joined WNML’s Josh and Swain on Wednesday and shared the latest on Coleman’s status.

“The eyes will be on Chaz Coleman next week when Tennessee reconvenes for the start of summer workouts,” said Price. “Everybody’s still out and about doing their own thing. They’ll get in town late this weekend. And then summer workouts with (strength coach) Derek Owings will begin early next week.

“As we sit here at 1:48 pm ET on Wednesday (May 20), I’ll just be shocked if he’s not back out there. I think there’s been some positive momentum there behind the scenes for the last several weeks. So I’m [willing to guess] he’s going to be there next week. Maybe I’ll be shocked, but that’s where I’m going as we sit here on Wednesday.”

That sounds like a positive sign for the Vols.

Coleman is a high-upside player who can be a game-wrecker in Jim Knowles’ defense. Tennessee will undoubtedly be a better team with a locked-in Coleman on the field this fall. And fortunately for the Vols, it sounds like things are trending in that direction.
