As we finish up the weekends of official visits, the Texas Longhorns got some huge news, landing the commitment of five-star plus cornerback John Meridith III. They beat out the Texas A&M Aggies and Alabama Crimson Tide for his commitment.

Five-Star Plus CB John Merideth III

  • Meridith is the No. 2 overall recruit in the class of 2027, and the top overall cornerback. He is also the No. 2 recruit in the state of Texas, behind DL Jalen Brewster.
  • Meridith is built like a top cornerback, measuring in at 6-2 and 175 pounds.
  • After adding Meridith to the class, the Texas Longhorns have the No. 7 overall class.

Texas Longhorns land commitment from five-star plus CB John Meridith III

It’s a huge coup for the Longhorns to land Meridith. Rivals has him compared to Indianapolis Colts cornerback Sauce Gardner, which is quite the lofty comparison.

“John Meredith’s combination of stature, length, and athleticism as a boundary corner reminds us of Sauce Gardner. Meredith is much more progressed as a prospect at the same stage, given he is more highly rated, sought after, and more physically filled out than Gardner was as a recruit. Gardner saw a growth spurt in college at Cincinnati. With that said, we see similarities between the two in terms of physical traits, play style, and ultimate ceiling.”

The downside right now for Meridith is that the UIL in Texas has declared him ineligible for transferring to North Crowley for academic purposes. There is a chance he won’t play this season, which isn’t ideal for a player entering his senior season. Even so, Meridith is a talented player who could make a serious impact on day one.

Meridith is the second five-star recruit to commit to the Longhorns, joining wide receiver Easton Royal. His recruitment has been a wild one, as the Florida Gators have been hot in his pursuit. Now that Meridith has committed, they can shift focus to keeping Royal on the roster.

Head coach Steve Sarkisian now has 16 total commitments, with 11 of them considered blue chip by Rivals.
