ESPN reporter details an interesting aspect of the Chiefs that fans need to have their eyes glued to as training camp gets closer
The Kansas City Chiefs have a good roster on paper, but some position battles will be had, especially at cornerback.
The Kansas City Chiefs are almost set to enter training camp. There’s a bit more off time for the players, but this team seems ready to go—ready to show everyone that the dynasty is not dead.
But some important decisions have to be made along the way. With training camp approaching, position battles will be had. Then, the roster will be cut from 90 to 53. The Chiefs will put the best 53 on the roster, but to do so, they have to address certain positions. The biggest one to keep your eyes on may be the cornerback position. There are a ton to watch, but who will win the starting job opposite rookie Mansoor Delane is a huge question mark.
ESPN’s Nate Taylor talks about the biggest training camp question mark
“Which starting job remains the biggest question mark? The Chiefs have plenty of options at cornerback, which should make the competition in training camp fascinating. L’Jarius Sneed, who played his first four seasons with the Chiefs, rejoined the team during mandatory minicamp.
“Sneed will be battling against Kristian Fulton and Nohl Williams for likely the starting role opposite of rookie Mansoor Delane, their top draft pick. Even when the Chiefs use their nickel personnel, the player in the slot could be Chris Roland-Wallace, Kader Kohou, or rookie Jadon Canady.” — Nate Taylor, ESPN
This is a good problem to have. And, it’s important to note that just because Sneed was once the CB1 on this team and won a Super Bowl that way, it doesn’t mean he’s automatically the CB2 now that he’s back. Sneed signed a one-year, $1.2 million contract, including $1.2 million guaranteed. So, nothing about him being on the team is guaranteed when it comes to a starting position.
The Chiefs also have some insanely talented young guys to consider. At the end of the season, Williams was really starting to come on strong. He finished the season playing 256 coverage snaps, allowed 16 catches on 32 targets for 208 receiving yards and one touchdown. Of course, Fulton started to play well, too, once he was finally healthy. There will be some tough decisions to be made.
