Florida Gators head coach Jon Sumrall has been hot in pursuit of five-star recruits for the 2027 class. From the outset, it was somewhat ambitious for him to attack so many during his first recruiting cycle.

He did land five-star offensive lineman Maxwell Hiller, the No. 3 overall recruit, while targeting multiple others, including No. 1 overall recruit, defensive lineman Jalen Brewster.

Florida Gators are still hopeful to land WR Easton Royal

The other five-star the Gators have been targeting is wide receiver Easton Royal. The Gators have hosted Royal multiple times after his commitment to the Texas Longhorns, and they are still in contention to land him. Rivals’ Sam Spiegelman gave an update on his recruitment, with the Gators still “keeping pace.”

“Personally, I do favor Sumrall a little bit. He’s got some Louisiana spice to him. He’s really outgoing, and it feels like a family. If I were to go there, he’d be an extension of family. At the end of the day, we’re all his sons, and he pours into us. Coach Sumrall is gonna get after you every day and he’s gonna get the most out of you.”

Royal already committed to the Texas Longhorns on November 29th, making it even more difficult for the Gators to convince him to head to Gainesville. Even more interesting is that there hasn’t been movement on the Rivals’ Recruiting Prediction Machine. The Gators are still tied for fourth with Texas A&M at 1.4%. Now, we could see movement here soon, but Royal is still mulling things over.

What is really impressive here is the Gators still being involved in Royal’s recruitment. It helps that Sumrall began a relationship with him while being the head coach of the Tulane Green Wave. It’s a huge step forward for the Gators to just be involved, and if they land Royal, perception nationwide will change completely.
