Florida Gators take important step for elite 2028 recruit, but Jon Sumrall still has a lot of work left to secure his commitment
The 2028 recruiting class is getting a lot more attention from the Florida Gators, and they are inching closer to landing one.
The quarterback position has been a focus for Florida Gators head coach Jon Sumrall, and they aren’t limiting themselves to the 2027 class.
The Gators have landed in the top three of four-star quarterback Kingston Preyear, as he will announce his commitment on July 10th between the Gators, Alabama Crimson Tide, and Vanderbilt Commodores.
Florida Gators make top three for 2028 quarterback Kingston Preyear
It’s not a surprise that Sumrall is connected to another top quarterback. He landed four-star quarterback Davin Davidson after being linked to five-star recruits, but he was their target. Once he committed in April, things really took off in recruiting.
With quarterback solidified in 2027, the attention turned to 2028 with Preyear being a top target for the Gators. Back in early May, I wrote this about Preyear with the Gators, as Rivals viewed them as a strong favorite.
“Early on, Rivals has Preyear ranked as the 63rd overall recruit and the No. 5 quarterback in the 2028 class. The 6-2 and 190-pound prospect has a lot of suitors. So far, Preyear has visited Gainesville twice among his 12 total visits: January 24th and March 27th. Right now, the Gators are third on the Rivals’ Recruiting Prediction Machine at 14.0%, behind the Alabama Crimson Tide (23.8%) and Auburn Tigers (35.7%).”
Well, things have changed a bit when it comes to momentum. While the Gators are in the top-3 for Preyear, the Rivals Prediction Machine doesn’t have them in a good spot. Only Alabama (97.6%) and Auburn (1.0%) have registered percentages, and the Tigers didn’t make his top three.
There was some momentum to land Preyear for the Gators, but that has stalled out. Even so, landing in the top-3 is a good step for the Gators, and they have hosted him twice, with the last being on March 27th.
Sumrall has just under two weeks to convince Preyear to head Gainesville’s way, but that in itself is a difficult proposition. July 10th will come quickly.
