‘Tennessee is trending heavy’ — Insider gives update on a Vols in-state target as decision date approaches
The Vols could end up two for two on in-state running backs this month.
The Tennessee Vols are pushing hard for help in their running back room for years to come, and that push comes from within the borders of the Volunteer State.
Oh, is there a battle brewing there for a running back in the state of Tennessee? Who knew?
Kidding aside, the Vols have a pair of in-state running back targets that they’re looking to lock down in the month of July. Five-star Chattanooga Baylor RB David Gabriel Georges is the headliner and is currently the top priority for Tennessee as they battle Ohio State for his commitment.
But further west, Tennessee is pushing for the commitment of another running back, and it sounds like they’re making good progress there.
Three-star RB Asa Barnes from Martin, TN (Westview) is close to making a decision. And according to Rivals recruiting insider Steve Wiltfong, the Vols are “trending heavy” for the talented ballcarrier’s pledge.
Tennessee in the driver’s seat to land Martin, TN RB Asa Barnes
“Tennessee is trending heavy for the talented in-state running back,” Wiltfong said. “6-foot, 200 pounds. Obviously aware of the shadow of David Gabriel Georges and Tennessee’s love for him, but the Vols lead in this recruitment for Asa Barnes. He doesn’t care who’s in the room, whether DGG is in the room or not. Tennessee is the program that checks the boxes for him.”
Barnes isn’t just an afterthought as far as someone who could come in and have an impact in Knoxville. The 5-11, 200-pound running back has a slew of notable offers from around the country, including Alabama, Ohio State, USC, Ole Miss, Arkansas, Kentucky, and Missouri.
But it appears as though Heupel has the Vols out in front of the Razorbacks with Barnes’ decision date coming up later in July after Gabriel Georges makes his decision on July 22.
July is a crucial month for the near future of Tennessee football this month, and it could end up being a very good one when all is said and done.
