Former Tennessee Vols head coach Butch Jones has had his fair share of embarrassing moments over the last 15 years.

One that stands out from his post-Tennessee career, however, came in 2020 when his job title at Alabama changed from “analyst” to “special assistant to the head coach.”

That’s not a job title we had seen in college football at the time, and as you can imagine, there were plenty of jokes about it.

Jones may finally be off the hook because as of this week, there’s another former head coach turned “assistant to the head coach” in college football.

Former Texas Longhorns head coach Tom Herman was named the “assistant to the head coach” at Florida State under head coach Mike Norvell.

Now that this job title is becoming more common, maybe we can’t let Butch off the hook. I’m not saying he’s a trailblazer for the assistant to the head coach job title, but maybe it’s not quite as embarrassing for him as we all thought it was.
