We’ll see the end of the 2026 World Cup this weekend. For the Miami Dolphins’ home field, things have already wrapped up. Hard Rock Stadium has just hosted its final game of the event — a 6-4 thriller between England and France.
Yet a subplot from this World Cup may end up fueling some offseason drama for the NFL. A lingering storyline for a whole bunch of NFL franchises, if you will. The Cup has been played on all grass surfaces, including in places where the NFL team plays on turf. A wave of tweets from NFL players with the hashtag ‘#WorthTheCost’ as a campaign appears to be kicking off an effort to try get NFL owners to buy into similar investments for their own players. Thankfully, the Miami Dolphins are ahead of the curve on this fight.

The NFL players have a right to be upset on this one. If we’re going to watch another international event c0me into the same stadiums that the NFL’s stars play on and get all-grass playing surfaces, it proves that the logistics are doable for stadiums all over the country. And that includes MetLife Stadium, where the Dolphins play every season to square off against the New York Jets.
If it’s good enough for FIFA and the World Cup stars, what kind of message does it send to a franchise insistent on playing with turf every week in the fall?
Thankfully, the Miami Dolphins will be on the outside looking in on this conversation. One of the best developments from the team’s tenure on Hard Knocks in 2023 was the spotlight put on the Dolphins’ sod farm purchase. The Miami groundskeeping team has been doing the work needed for years.
If you remember correctly, the Dolphins have their own sod farm. And they’re the only NFL franchise who can lay claim to owning one.
“This is the only sod farm owned by one team. There’s not one other in the entire world that I’m aware of. Last year, I was fortunate enough to go to Qatar for the World Cup, got to meet with other groundskeepers from various parts of the world. I’m still blown away by the opportunity to provide our own playing surface,” Wilson said on HBO’s Hard Knocks.
NFL players and the players association want to make sure all NFL owners and franchises know that they are ‘worth the cost’. The Miami Dolphins already agree — as they’ve been putting their money where their mouth is for years.
