Panthers’ $120 million investment may have just got even more pressure added to his plate in 2026 after Nic Scourton’s injury
Carolina Panthers promising second-year outside linebacker Nic Scourton went down with a right knee injury on Thursday, a potential loss that could add even more pressure for prized free agent addition Jaelan Phillips.
The Carolina Panthers suffered a potentially crushing blow to the defense on Thursday, the first day of training camp, when promising second-year outside linebacker Nic Scourton went down with a right knee injury and was carted off the field.
The extent of Scourton’s injury has yet to be announced. Head coach Dave Canales told reporters after practice that he was not going to speculate on Scourton’s injury until learning more from the MRIs he’s set to undergo after Thursday’s practice.
If the worst-case scenario comes true for Scourton and he’s forced to miss extended time, possibly even the entire season, such a loss would put even more pressure on the team’s prized free agent acquisition based on the level of depth currently on the roster.
Nic Scourton’s potential injury adds even more pressure on Jaelan Phillips going into 2026
Scourton was expected to be one of the Panthers’ starting edge rushers opposite Jaelan Phillips, whom the Panthers signed to a $120 million contract in free agency (the most expensive free agent signing in franchise history).
Carolina had high hopes for what Phillips could bring off the edge as a top threat and how his presence could open things up for Scourton on the other end of the defensive front.
“He can go inside, he can take you outside, I mean, he’s just ridiculous, and I break down his tape a lot because I want to see who I’m rushing by,” Scourton said of Phillips earlier this offseason.
The Panthers went out to sign Phillips to have a player capable of “dominating the edge” and “hit home runs in the passing game” in critical moments. A big part of that was having Scourton on the other side, giving opposing teams two top edge rushers to worry about. You can’t double-team both guys and if Scourton is forced to miss extended time due to this injury, teams can single-out Phillips off the edge.
Even going back to his time in Miami and Philadelphia, Phillips was never called upon to be “the guy” and had issues turning his disruption into production. In Miami, Phillips’ sack numbers decreased year after year despite playing opposite Bradley Chubb. After joining the Eagles mid-season, Phillips played with some of the top defensive line talent in the league and still only managed to record 2.0 sacks in eight games.
Jaelan Phillips has his own durability concerns that the Panthers were willing to overlook
The other thing that slowed Phillips’ NFL career and trajectory toward becoming a premiere pass rusher is his lengthy injury history. Phillips suffered multiple concussions in college and even briefly retired from football before entering the league. With the Dolphins, Phillips suffered an Achilles and ACL tear in back-to-back seasons.
Phillips put those injury concerns behind him last season playing all 17 games between his stint with the Dolphins and Eagles, but his injury history did cause people around the league to raise an eyebrow when seeing the deal he landed in Carolina.
Everything already pointed toward this being a boom-or-bust signing for the Panthers and now there’s going to be even more pressure on Phillips’ plate to produce and stay on the field during his first season in Carolina.
