Bears’ pre training camp workouts offer an early clue about Chicago’s biggest position concerns ahead of next week’s practice
The Chicago Bears worked out six players on Friday ahead of next week’s training camp and the positions of those players might matter more to fans than the names the team are bringing in for a closer look.
The rookies for the Chicago Bears will be reporting back to the team facilities on Saturday followed by the veterans on Tuesday leading up to the start of training camp next week, but head coach Ben Johnson is getting an early start on his roster evaluations.
The Bears had six free agents in the building for workouts on Friday ahead of training camp and the list of players the team brought in offers an early clue about Chicago’s biggest position concerns. Here are the six players that worked out:
- DB Hudson Clark
- OG Kaylan Faumui
- DB Glendon Miller
- DB Josh Minkins
- DB Marlen Sewell
- OT Ben Te Kura
Closer look at the six players the Chicago Bears had in the building on Friday
Hudson Clark played safety at Arkansas and signed with the Las Vegas Raiders as an undrafted free agent in 2025. Clark was waived by the Raiders in August and eventually took his talents to the UFL after signing with the the Birmingham Stallions. Clark had one interception and 15 tackles for the Stallions in eight games during the spring season. Earlier this month, he also worked out for the Miami Dolphins.
Kaylan Faumui was selected as one of the NFL’s 13 International Player Pathway players, and was the only one selected out of Samoa. Faumui is 6-foot-3, 325 pounds, and has a rugby background. He recently worked out with the New England Patriots.
Glendon Miller played safety at Maryland and signed with the Kansas City Chiefs as an undrafted free agent in 2025. Like Clark, Miller was waived in August and eventually made his way over the UFL where he recorded 33 tackles and three pass breakups with the Houston Gamblers.
Josh Minkins follows in that same trend as a standout safety at Cincinnati who originally signed with the New England Patriots last year as an undrafted free agent. He too spent the spring in the UFL, totaling 32 tackles and three pass breakups with the Orlando Storm.
Marlen Sewell played safety at Vanderbilt and signed with the Kansas City Chiefs earlier this spring following rookie minicamp. The Chiefs waived Sewell back in June to make room on the 90-man offseason roster for the reunion with L’Jarius Sneed.
Ben Te Kura follows a similar path as Faumui as one of the NFL’s International Player Pathway out of Australia. He formerly played rugby for the Brisbane Broncos in the National Rugby League and was actually the league’s tallest player at 6-9 before deciding to make the transition to American football.
Chicago Bears are clearly looking to add talent at key positions heading into training camp
Based on those six players, four of them play safety and two of them are international players looking to become offensive linemen. That gives you a sign about which positions the Bears are interested in adding more to heading into training camp.
Safety is one of the team’s weakest positions on the roster heading into camp, so it’s not a shock to see the Bears bring in four different safeties for a workout. Behind the two expected starters (Coby Bryant and Dillon Thieneman), the rest of the safety room consists of Elijah Hicks, Cam Lewis, Gervarrius Owens, Skyler Thomas, and Anthony Johnson Jr. This position will be one to watch to see if any additions are made.
As for the offensive line, why not bring in two raw talents with exciting traits in Faumui and Te Kura to see what they’ve got. The Bears have 16 offensive linemen currently on the roster but there’s no harm in exploring young options out there before camp.
