Country music superstar Morgan Wallen is a huge Tennessee fan, but he crossed a line that Vols fans aren’t happy about.
Country music superstar Morgan Wallen is one of the most famous Tennessee Vols fans in the country.
Wallen, an East Tennessee native, is a die-hard Vols fan who often attends Tennessee sporting events.
Wallen bleeds orange — there’s absolutely no doubting his fandom or his loyalty (he even refused to wear Alabama gear during a recent concert in Tuscaloosa).
Unfortunately, Wallen made a snafu during a concert at Michigan Stadium (aka the Big House) on Saturday night that Vols fans aren’t thrilled about.
Wallen walked to the stage wearing a throwback Charles Woodson Michigan jersey.
Look, I don’t think there’s anything wrong with Wallen wearing a jersey of the team whose stadium (or city) he’s performing in — as long as it’s not one of Tennessee’s top rivals (which, again, he refused to wear Bama gear in Bryant-Denny Stadium earlier this year).
But you can’t wear a Charles Woodson jersey. Vols fans are still sour about Woodson winning the Heisman Trophy over Peyton Manning in 1997. It was a travesty then and it’s still a travesty now (former Vols offensive coordinator David Cutcliffe said last fall that it still bothers him that Peyton didn’t win the Heisman).
Wallen could’ve gone with several other options. Desmond Howard, Aidan Hutchinson, even JJ McCarthy. You just can’t go with Charles Woodson.
And hey, I thought it was cool that Wallen wore a throwback Glen Rice basketball jersey on Saturday night. Again, he’s an entertainer and I will never have any problem with a singer playing up to the crowd — it’s part of the gig.
But don’t wear the jersey of the man who broke Vols fans hearts nearly 30 years ago.
It’s not the end of the world, Wallen is a Vol through and through, but he may want to learn a lesson from this misstep.
