The Chicago Bears just potentially suffered its first major injury of training camp on Monday, during the first practice session in full pads, after starting safety Coby Bryant was carted off the far field and grabbing at his left knee/leg.

Bryant went down awkwardly during a one-on-one drill against veteran tight end Cole Kmet. The veteran safety slammed his helmet down after the play and was being checked on by a few staff members before leaving the field. We will provide more updates on Bryant’s injury status once they are available.

In the meantime, veteran defensive back Cam Lewis replaced Bryant with the first-team defense during 11-on-11 drills. It’s worth noting that safety Elijah Hicks remains on the PUP list as well with a shin injury, making things now suddenly thin at the position.

Losing Coby Bryant would be a massive blow for Chicago’s defense

Bryant signed with the Bears earlier this offseason on a three-year, $40 million deal as one of the team’s top free agent acquisitions. Bryant was expected to replace former All-Pro team captain Kevin Byard III in the backend of Dennis Allen’s unit and so far was making a strong first impression in Chicago based on the first week of camp.

“I love his play style,” Dennis Allen told reporters last Wednesday. “I think it epitomizes the way that we want to play the game. He plays fast. He plays violent. He’s smart. He’s instinctive. He just does a lot of really good things. He was an impressive guy to watch on tape.”

Bryant ended the first week of training camp with a defensive high note after intercepting a pass from quarterback Caleb Williams. The energy he was bringing on the field was clearly visible and it’s clear he was a player a lot of his teammates were looking up to.

“That’s why I’m here — to bring guys along,” Bryant said last week. “We’ve got a ton of great players throughout this team, especially on defense as well. We want to be well known not just [because of] coach Ben and the offense, but especially powerful on defense as well. We want to create our name as far as turnovers, play style, mentality – that’s something we want to bring to this team.”

Injuries suck and we’re wishing for the best when it comes to the extent of Bryant’s injury. Head coach Ben Johnson spoke with reporters ahead of practice, so we won’t receive any update after practice ends. We’ll just have to stand by until the official report is made.
