College football analyst makes final pick ahead of Alabama’s quarterback battle between Austin Mack and Keelon Russell
The Alabama Crimson Tide will start fall camp this week, and everyone wants to know what will happen at quarterback. Here is a take on who comes out on top from my colleague Ryan Roberts, with added insight from me.
The Alabama Crimson Tide open fall camp this week, and the quarterback battle in Tuscaloosa between Keelon Russell and Austin Mack dominates every conversation surrounding the program. A to Z Sports’ Ryan Roberts recently went through and picked the winners of every quarterback battle in the country, selecting Russell as the starter for Alabama. I agree with Ryan, and the reasoning comes down to one critical factor: mobility.
Alabama position battles to watch
- QB (Keelon Russell vs. Austin Mack).
- RB (EJ Crowell, Daniel Hill, AK Dear, etc.)
- WR No. 3 (Cederian Morgan, Noah Rodgers, etc).
Why Russell’s dual-threat ability raises Alabama’s floor
Roberts made a strong point about Keelan Russell’s advantage over Austin Mack in the mobility department. Russell is a dual-threat quarterback who is wise beyond his years, capable as a pocket passer and as a scrambler. That combination raises the floor of Alabama’s offense in a meaningful way. When it’s third-and-7 and nobody’s open, Russell can scramble and pick up 7, 8, 9, 10 yards. We’re not entirely sure Austin Mack has that capability.

The overall dual-threat component Russell brings is just a little bit different, though. He possesses an incredibly talented throwing arm and is a dynamic athlete with his legs.”
“For an Alabama team completely making over its offensive line and extremely young up front, having a quarterback who can create with his legs could be a huge component. Russell was a 5-star player for a reason coming out of the state of Texas. After learning the offense for a year under Ty Simpson, this feels like the perfect time to unleash the young, talented signal caller.” – Roberts
Mack has the experience advantage, no question. He’s going into year 4 in the system, dating back to his time with Kalen DeBoer at Washington. But experience alone doesn’t solve every problem this offense faces heading into 2026.
An inexperienced offensive line changes the equation
Alabama’s offensive line is very inexperienced. The Crimson Tide lost key players at center, at left tackle, and across the unit. The new additions need time to mesh. The early portion of the schedule will be a feeling-out process until Alabama hits that brutal 5-game stretch in October that will determine its 2026 season.
For an offensive line still finding its footing, having a quarterback who can extend plays with his legs is not a luxury. It’s a necessity. What matters is having a quarterback Kalen DeBoer can trust to orchestrate and carry out the offense, but also someone who can bail you out. When the going gets tough, when Ryan Coleman-Williams, Lotzier Brooks, and Cederian Morgan aren’t getting open, somebody has to make a play. That somebody has to be the quarterback, and he has to be able to do it with his legs. That is Keelon Russell.
The bottom line on Alabama’s QB battle
I’m in total agreement with Roberts. I think Keelon Russell will be the starter come Week 1. Not because of the spring game or the spring he had over Austin Mack, but because of everything he brings to this offense. The mobility, the ability to create when structure breaks down, and the capacity to carry a unit that will need time to develop around him. Russell checks every box DeBoer needs checked right now.
