An NFC franchise just did the Miami Dolphins a major favor entering the second week of training camp
One of the Miami Dolphins’ first measuring sticks of this summer just leveled up.
The Miami Dolphins will finish this week in South Florida. Then, mid-week next week, make their first travel trip of the 2026 season. Miami is headed to the Mid-Atlantic, where they’ll hold a joint practice with the Washington Commanders ahead of next Friday’s preseason opener.
It’s a great break from the monotony of camp. You can only hit on your own teammates for so long before it’s time to shake things up. And the joint practice will serve as a valuable litmus test for where this Dolphins franchise stands in their readiness to play, too. But the stakes have been raised for one position group in particular ahead of that practice. The Dolphins will now need to be charged with covering Terry McLaurin and Stefon Diggs in practice.

Good! This Miami Dolphins defensive backfield needs to get thrown right into the fire. Rookie cornerback Chris Johnson has only seen one wide receiver room in his NFL career: his own. Veterans Juju Brents, Jason Marshall Jr., and the rest of the competitors for playing time in the cornerback room? They need to be forged by fire for the year ahead.
To be frank? Up until the signing of Diggs, things were looking pretty bleak for Washington to offer anything close to a “fire”. McLaurin was previously surrounded by a rookie in Antonio Williams and underachievers in Treylon Burks and Luke McCaffrey.
Washington now has a pair of 1,000 yard receivers. There’s work to get, if you want it. And Jeff Hafley’s Dolphins defense needs to show who’s hungry enough to seize the moment. So while Washington’s signing of Diggs helps their 2026 season outlook, it also helps the Miami Dolphins prime these youngster for action. We should be thankful it happened now.
