Sooners are being predicted to continue a trend that started their elite 2027 recruiting class, but with the 2028 cycle
The Oklahoma Sooners need their 2028 recruiting class to have a similar start to the 2027 class, and landing Bixby offensive lineman Gavin Wilson will help.
The Oklahoma Sooners are being projected to land a three-star offensive lineman from one of the best high school football programs in the state.
Gavin Wilson, the 6’2, 255-pound lineman from Bixby High School, has Oklahoma as the projected destination, according to Rivals vice president of recruiting and transfer portal Steve Wiltfong, who placed a 60% confidence rating on the prediction.
Wilson is a four-star recruit on Rivals with an 86.50 rating, a top-300 recruit nationally, No. 16 at his position, and No. 4 in the state of Oklahoma in the 2028 recruiting class. He’s already taken two visits to OU, and the race appears to be between the Sooners and Oklahoma State, though Missouri, Purdue, and Oregon also have some interest.
Why Wilson matters for the 2028 class
The Sooners have only one player committed in their 2028 recruiting class right now: quarterback Trey Tagliaferri. OU is being projected to land recruits like Kellen Hall and Dedrick Kimbrough, but they don’t have those guys yet. Landing Wilson could kickstart the class and build momentum, which is exactly what they need.
Wilson is a little on the smaller side at 6-foot-2, 255 pounds, but he can definitely put on more weight. He’s in the 2028 class, so there’s plenty of time for physical development before he arrives on campus.
Bixby pipeline forming for the Sooners
The Sooners didn’t use to recruit through Bixby, even though they should have been. Bixby is the best football program in Oklahoma and one of the best in the country. But OU changed that in the 2027 recruiting cycle by going after Kaeden Penny. He is arguably the best offensive tackle in the entire class and may slide into guard at the next level.
Now they’re doing the same thing with Wilson, repeating a trend that could pay off for years. Penny was one of the first recruits in the 2027 class for the Sooners. Wilson is projected to land in a similar spot for 2028. The class could get started in a similar fashion, which is exactly what you would want because the 2027 recruiting class is already one of the best in the country.
Brent Venables, Bill Bedenbaugh, and company are recruiting at a strong rate right now. The commitments aren’t flying in just yet, but you have to be patient with these things. These are kids making life decisions. Wilson seems like he’s going to end up being a Sooner at some point in time.
