Oklahoma Sooners beating Texas has allowed some huge results in an area you would think has taken a hit given their recent struggles
The Oklahoma Sooners beat the Texas Longhorns in the Red River Rivalry, and the recruiting is doing great.
The Oklahoma Sooners beat the Texas Longhorns in the 2026 Red River Rivalry, and the win should do a lot for the program. That is especially true for Oklahoma recruiting, which got a major boost from Saturday’s Cotton Bowl result in Dallas.
The 2026 season had started to look like a year that wouldn’t be great for OU. Plenty of people began doubting whether this team would win more than six games, and that is still a reasonable doubt. Texas was probably one of the weakest No. 1-ranked teams we’ve seen in some time. Still, the Longhorns are a good football team, and Oklahoma beat them. So that has to help recruiting, right? It does.
Sooners’ 2027 commits saw the vision
Sam Spiegelman of Rivals reported on Oklahoma’s recruiting efforts, covering both the prospects the Sooners are chasing and the ones already in the fold. Winning a game like this one will do a lot for both groups.
Several of the Sooners’ 2027 commits were at the game on a visit. That includes Keldrid Ben, who is one of the best running backs in the class, and Greydon Howell. A win like this helps them stay committed and see the vision they’re supposed to be part of.
Recruits are still kids. If a program keeps losing, and those kids show up on visits only to watch the team come up short against other top opponents, they start second-guessing their decisions. Oklahoma avoided that problem by taking down the top-ranked team in the country with its commits in the building.
Top 2028 targets loved what they saw at the Cotton Bowl
The Sooners also got strong feedback from players they are still trying to land. That list includes three-star wide receiver Brody Knowles, whom OU really likes, and Rivals top-300 linebacker Tylan Henderson.
Henderson came away from the Cotton Bowl wanting more of the rivalry:
“I would love to play in this game for the next three or four years. Coming into the game, Oklahoma was high on my list and still is.”
That is the type of quote you love to hear if you’re Oklahoma. Then, Henderson’s teammate Reagan Smith followed it up with an even bigger reaction after the game:
“Oklahoma feels like it’s a good fit for several reasons: the style of play they have, how they move their, their guys around, and and Coach Nate Dryling’s approach to coaching. Each time I’ve visited campus, I’ve gotten to not only see the culture, the culture, but experience being a part of it, and that’s something to be excited about. Um, definitely an experience I’ll never forget. The game day atmosphere at the Cotton Bowl was unlike any other game I’ve ever been to. They proved they could fight, had willpower, and no quit.”
What else could you possibly want? Smith’s reaction is exactly why winning rivalry games in a neutral setting like the Cotton Bowl is such a big deal. You want recruits on visits to feel exactly like that.
A win like this sends two messages at once. Oklahoma still has a lot to work on, and a recruit could help fix it. But the Sooners are also showing they are still in a good place. This is not a program at the bottom of the barrel, and that is a strong position to recruit from. Rivals 300 wide receiver Damarion Mays liked what he saw, too.
“Man, it was crazy. They fought to the very end, and they deserved it,” Mays said.
The Sooners are still keeping these recruits interested, and those prospects clearly like what Oklahoma is building. Commits like Ben and Howell have a reason to feel good about their decisions, while targets like Henderson, Smith, and Mays left Dallas with Oklahoma firmly on their minds.
Either way you slice the rest of the 2026 season, this win could not have come at a better time or against a better opponent. It is huge for the program.
