One Miami Dolphins hopeful was handed the ultimate plot twist ahead of Saturday’s preseason contest
One Miami Dolphins hopeful’s game day just experienced the ultimate plot twist.
The Miami Dolphins will kick off their second preseason contest of 2026 later this afternoon against the New York Giants. But when Miami takes the field, one of their many roster hopefuls will not be joining them.
The Dolphins’ cornerback room is full of competition and open roster spots. Veteran cornerback Nick McCloud was among them. But in preparation for today’s contest, McCloud has been released. It marks the end of his bid to make the 2026 Miami Dolphins.
Miami Dolphins release cornerback Nick McCloud ahead of preseason contest against New York Giants
It’s a tough business, as they say. And, without knowing all of the details that went into the decision, all we know is that McCloud was cut loose just hours before a chance to suit up and play against the New York Giants in his latest bid to put tape on display that could help his prospects of staying on a roster in 2026.
Miami’s cornerback situation is getting healthier, with JuJu Brents nearing a return to action after getting dinged up earlier in training camp. The Dolphins do also have Storm Duck and Darrell Baker Jr. on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list, too. Both have been on NFL 53-man rosters and are expected to play at some point this season. That doesn’t appear close, however. It’s likely safe to assume the status of neither player impacted this decision from the Dolphins.
It makes the team’s choice to release McCloud one to watch. Is there another shoe to drop with a pending transaction? Or did the Dolphins simply see enough to make their decision without the extra tape? Either way, it has the makings of a tough game day twist for McCloud.
