Jon-Eric Sullivan offers an update on one of the rookies the Miami Dolphins need most

The Miami Dolphins have no shortage of important rookie draft choices to monitor in 2026. The team made 13 draft choices, after all.
But the reality of the situation is Miami needs third-round draft choice Caleb Douglas to be a hit this season. Not necessarily a superstar. But a contributing talent? Absolutely. The good news? The first two weeks of camp have produced favorable reports for Douglas in a wide open wide receiver room. And now, we’re hearing from Dolphins general manager Jon-Eric Sullivan on his progress. Sullivan joined ‘The Joe Rose Show’ and spoke about what he’s seen from the third-round wide receiver.

“I think you’ve got to tip your cap to the coaches in the room, Tyke (Tolbert) and Krause. Those guys that work with him every day. But Caleb has a LOT of natural gifts. That was what attracted us to him in draft process. First of all, it’s the body type. He’s tall, he’s long, he can run. The thing that he can do for a tall, long athlete is he can bend. He can get in and out of breaks. Got extremely quick feet and, like all of them, he’s honing his craft. Getting better every day, he’s learning that this is the National Football League, not the Big XII. Some of that, some of the hard lessons he’s learned early on, he’s starting to reap the benefits of that.”

The surprise selection of Douglas became one of the first big measuring sticks of the Sullivan era in Miami. The NFL Draft consensus considered Douglas as a “reach”. And there were several other receivers who pundits (to be fair, myself included) coveted over the Texas Tech product.
But Douglas has been one of the best wide receivers in camp for the Miami Dolphins over the past two weeks. Douglas and Malik Washington appear to be separating for the rest of the group. Fellow rookie wide receiver Chris Bell may end up having something to say about it when he returns from his torn ACL rehabilitation. And there’s also plenty of ballgame left in the preseason.
Douglas ultimately becoming a successful draft choice, despite the external noise, would be a major trust-builder for Sullivan in the eyes of the fans. The proposition is certainly on the table if Douglas is able to continue to build on his early momentum. This week offers new opportunities against the Washington Commanders, too — so we’ll get a fresh look.
