Detroit Lions release new Nike rivalry uniforms, and they’re unlike anything the team has ever worn
The dark teasers pointed in one direction. Detroit’s actual Rivalries look went somewhere very different — and that’s part of what makes it work.
The Detroit Lions unveiled their new Nike rivalry uniforms, and the look is way different from anything Detroit has ever done. The gray jersey features “Detroit” across the front with dark grayish-blue numbers and striping up on the shoulders, matching the dark gray-blue aesthetic the Lions used to tease the release leading up to the reveal.
Look, I think they’re really cool. I’m interested to see what Lions fans think of them. I expected the Lions to go in a completely different direction. I thought the whole jersey would be dark blue with gray numbers, or maybe a really dark grayish-blue base. But no, it’s actually light gray. And honestly, that’s what makes it stand out.
This is a pretty cool-looking jersey. It doesn’t resemble anything in Detroit’s current uniform rotation, and I think that’s the whole point. I think these things are going to sell like hotcakes.
Of course, some will draw comparisons to the design of the Carolina Panthers again, like they did when the Lions brought back their black jerseys a few years ago, but again, there may be similarities, but at the end of the day there are clear differences.
When will the Lions wear the new rivalry uniforms?
Detroit will debut the new look in Week 8 against the Minnesota Vikings. The Vikings also released their rivalry uniforms on the same day, though Minnesota’s version looks a lot more similar to their current jerseys. There’s really nothing a whole lot different about the Vikings’ design. Detroit’s, on the other hand, stands apart.
We’ll find out soon if there will be hats, shirts, and other gear to match the new uniform aesthetic. I believe Nike will be releasing a matching Air Maxx shoe. We’ll find out about that soon enough once these things really hit the internet.
I’m a fan of Detroit’s new look. It doesn’t look like anything the Lions have ever done before, and I think that’s what makes it cool.
