‘That’s an embarrassment to the sport’ – Kirk Herbstreit is still fuming over what he saw in one of Tennessee’s games last season
Kirk Herbstreit still hasn’t gotten over one thing that he saw during a Tennessee Volunteers game that he called last season.
ESPN’s Kirk Herbstreit still hasn’t gotten over what he saw during last year’s game in Knoxville between Tennessee and Oklahoma.
Herbstreit, as you may recall, was flabbergasted in the broadcast booth during the matchup between the Vols and the Sooners over the length of Oklahoma kicker Tate Sandell’s shorts.
The longtime ESPN announcer suggested that Sandell, who made four field goals against Tennessee (three of which were over 50 yards), should’ve been penalized for the short shorts.
“I did not know they were that short,” said Sandell after the game. “But I’m not gonna say that I’m gonna change it, because it’s working. I didn’t know they were that short [until] I looked on TV, let’s say that.”
Kirk Herbstreit still isn’t happy about the short shorts
Herbstreit appeared on Bussin with the Boys this week and made it clear that he still thinks the short shorts are an “embarrassment.”
“This dude had like a jockstrap on,” said Herbstreit. “It was embarrassing.”
“Look at that,” added Herbstreit when a photo of the shorts popped up on screen. “That’s ridiculous. That’s an embarrassment to the sport. I can’t stand that.”
Herbstreit, by the way, doesn’t have anything personal against Sandell — he just really doesn’t like the short shorts.
“He’s a badass,” said Herbstreit of Sandell. “And he and I had some fun with it. But you can’t wear pants like that.”
There was actually talk earlier this offseason of placing an added emphasis on uniform rules to ensure that short shorts don’t make an appearance again in college football.
There’s been no information released on potential uniform rules, however, since the initial report in February that the rules committee was considering placing an emphasis on it.
Hopefully for Herbstreit’s sake, though, we don’t see any kickers trying to mimic Sandell’s look this fall for good luck (though while I’m on board with Herbstreit’s take, I wouldn’t blame anyone — Sandell had a game for the ages in the short shorts).
