South Carolina head coach Shane Beamer shares his thoughts on Tennessee’s 3 touchdowns that were erased by penalties
The Tennessee Volunteers had three touchdowns taken off the board in their loss to the South Carolina Gamecocks due to penalties.
One of the biggest stories from Tennessee’s 27-24 loss to South Carolina this past weekend is the three touchdowns the Vols had taken off the board due to penalties.
The penalties didn’t actually impact the plays, but they were legitimate penalties committed by Tennessee.
Had the Vols played disciplined football in those moments, the touchdowns would’ve counted and Tennessee probably wins the game by multiple scores.
On Tuesday, South Carolina head coach Shane Beamer was asked about the Tennessee touchdowns that were wiped out by penalties.
Specifically, he was asked what went wrong for the Gamecocks and if he’s concerned that his team gave up touchdowns that didn’t count only because of mistakes by Tennessee.
“They were penalties, so those were good calls,” said Beamer. “All three of them, I would say would just be more of a technique standpoint (that went wrong). The one down to the right of their bench towards the student section, we were in man coverage. Judge (Collier) was in great position. They made a heck of a throw and a heck of a catch. Now, we’ve got to play the technique a little bit better at the point of attack, but a good throw and a good catch. You tip your cap to them.
“The one that they threw to (Braylon) Staley to the right of our bench, kind of in the middle of the end zone, that was one where we were in a pretty soft zone coverage. We just kind of bit on an underneath route and didn’t quite get the depth on our drop that we needed to, and it was a good throw and catch. So I didn’t see anything there that is alarming. It’s just playing with a little bit better technique, and sometimes they’re going to make a play.”
Beamer also added that South Carolina committed some untimely penalties that extended drives for Tennessee.
Tennessee has won games in the past they probably shouldn’t have won because the opponent committed untimely penalties. Every program has been on both sides of the coin at some point.
Unfortunately for the Vols, they were the team on Saturday night that committed penalties at the worst possible time, and it cost them a game they should’ve won.
