The Texas A&M Aggies are hearing exactly what they want to hear about quarterback Marcel Reed heading into the 2026 season. Reed’s offseason development has drawn attention from those tracking the program closely, and the early returns suggest the Aggies’ signal-caller has made significant strides.
Pete Nakos of On3 has provided intel on how Reed’s offseason has gone, noting that “Marcel is more accurate, has more of a presence, and has another year of football for Mike Elko.”
That’s a significant statement for an Aggies team with legitimate SEC and national championship aspirations.
Reed’s late-season struggles created the offseason blueprint
Reed was very good throughout last year’s college football season until the final stretch, when things started to fall apart. Texas A&M was undefeated for much of the year before offensive struggles, costly interceptions, and losses to both Texas and Miami derailed the season’s momentum.
Those late-season collapses clearly motivated Reed this offseason. He recently told On3 that his goal is to win the SEC and a national title this year. For that to happen, the Aggies need better play from their quarterback, and the early reports suggest they’re going to get it. Nakos has identified Reed as a player poised to improve because of the help he’s received this offseason.
The supporting cast could unlock Reed’s ceiling
Reed won’t have to carry the offense alone. The Aggies are excited about the two-man punch they have at running back in Reuben Owens and Jamarion Morrow, and that tandem should take some of the pressure off Reed’s shoulders. The wide receiver room matters just as much. Mario Craver is returning after a 917-yard season with the Aggies.
Alabama transfer Isaiah Horton, who has known Reed since their high school days in Tennessee, adds another dynamic weapon to this offense. And that alone should also help Reed, because continuity and chemistry are everything. The offensive line has been reshuffled with a few transfer portal additions. If the pieces around Reed come together, there’s no reason why Texas A&M can’t be a national championship contender.
Reed’s dual-edged potential defines the Aggies’ season
Here’s the thing about Marcel Reed: he has the potential to be a Heisman candidate type of quarterback. We saw it at times last year. But he also has the potential to be a quarterback who can quite literally lose you games. We saw that too. Not the reason for the Aggies’ late-season collapse, but a reason. Last season, Reed finished with 3,169 passing yards on a 62% completion percentage, 25 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions. That’s a decent year and much better than the year before, when he had only 1,800 passing yards, 15 passing touchdowns, and six interceptions.
The progression is clear, and this is likely his final season. If he can put together a strong year, he could boost his NFL draft stock tremendously while helping Texas A&M chase what could be its first-ever National Championship. A lot of things have to go right for that to happen, and Reed is near the top of that list. But as Nakos has already reported, his sources and intel tell him Reed has taken a tremendous jump this offseason. If that jump translates to Saturdays, the Aggies could be one of the most dangerous teams in the country.
