Former Tennessee WR Jalin Hyatt’s fresh start that we thought he was going to get isn’t going to happen
Looks like it won’t be a fresh start after all for the former Tennessee Vols wide receiver.
Former Tennessee Vols wide receiver Jalen Hyatt won’t be getting the fresh start that many expected he would after the New York Giants released him on Sunday.
Hyatt, who spent the first three years of his NFL career with the Giants, cleared waivers on Monday and was not claimed by another team. As a result, New York is bringing him back on its practice squad.
The move to release Hyatt was expected after the former Vol was limited during much of training camp due to injury. At the time, it felt like a positive development for Hyatt because it opened the door for a fresh start elsewhere.
But that door closed when no team put in a waiver claim.
The good news is that Hyatt still has a home in the NFL, and there’s a chance he could be elevated on game days at some point this season depending on how the Giants’ roster situation plays out. But the opportunity to land with a new organization and reset his career simply didn’t work out the way we expected. He’s going to have to continue battling it out in New York for an opportunity.
The Giants have a new coaching staff, so it is a bit of a fresh start compared to what Hyatt experienced the last three seasons under previous head coach Brian Daboll. It’s still the same uniform, but at least the voices in the building are different.
That said, I don’t think John Harbaugh’s offense is the best fit for Hyatt (though fit can be overblown at times). Ultimately, if Hyatt shows he can make plays, the new staff will find a way to use him.
