The Las Vegas Raiders made a significant move just a day after finalizing their initial 53-man roster. Vegas used the No. 1 waiver wire spot to claim former San Francisco 49ers cornerback Darrell Luter, waiving cornerback Decamerion Richardson in the process.

The move signals a clear shift in how the Raiders’ current regime views its cornerback depth, and it raises questions about what Luter brings to the table that Richardson couldn’t provide.

Why the Raiders must feel strongly about Luter

The Raiders had the No. 1 waiver wire claim, and they used it on Luter. That alone tells you how strongly they feel about him. Luter has played quite a bit of football over the last few years for San Francisco in a really good defense, and he could be a pretty decent addition for Las Vegas. He can come in and be a quality depth piece, and the Raiders may even see him as a candidate to take over that third cornerback spot.

We all know the plans are probably for Jermod McCoy to be the second cornerback, so the question becomes what happens from there. Luter could slot in as the next man up, and his experience in the 49ers’ system gives him a leg up on a raw project.

Richardson never quite put it together

Richardson was a fourth-round pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, the No. 112 pick overall. The Raiders drafted him for obvious reasons. He’s 6’2, 200 pounds, with elite speed and insanely long arms. He was a high-potential pick, a very raw athlete the Raiders loved.

Unfortunately for Richardson, he hasn’t done a whole lot in his few years in the league. In 11 games in coverage and 330 coverage snaps, he was targeted 37 times, allowed 22 completions for 354 receiving yards, and gave up two touchdowns with a few passes deflected. The production simply hasn’t been there.

It is a somewhat stunning move because Richardson is still very young and was drafted by the franchise a few years ago. But on the other side of things, that was two regimes ago. The current front office and coaching staff didn’t pick him, and this move shows the Raiders feel Luter has higher potential right now, or maybe higher potential in general.

The sign was there

Richardson had a solid training camp, and a lot of people thought he deservedly made the initial 53-man roster. But there was a telling sign in that final preseason game. When you see a player out there playing until the very last snap of the game, you start to wonder how the coaching staff truly feels about him. Players who are locked into a roster spot typically don’t play until the final whistle in the last preseason game. That was the indicator, and now Richardson is no longer on the team.

Richardson is a guy who has everything in front of him. He has the talent, the athleticism, and the body type. It’s about putting it all together. He’s an NFL player somewhere, but his role and landing spot remain unclear.

The Raiders clearly believe Luter gives them a better option at cornerback depth right now, and they were willing to burn the top waiver claim to prove it.
