The Miami Dolphins loaded up on the waiver wire claims on Monday. Miami landed a whopping seven players off the waiver wire to go with one free agent signing, too.
But not everything went perfect for the Dolphins’ hopes and aspirations yesterday. As it turns out, there was one who got away from Miami (and several other teams) thanks to the NFL’s waiver wire structure.
CB Darrell Luter was one who got away from the Miami Dolphins yesterday among waiver wire splurge
It turns out that CB Darrell Luter was a popular man on Monday morning. Five total teams filed a claim for Luter — with the Raiders collecting his services. The NFL’s waiver wire policy in the offseason is based off the NFL Draft order. So once the Raiders, who owned the No. 1 overall pick in April, made the claim? No one else stood a chance.
The good news for Miami is that several reinforcements into the secondary were collected alongside their effort to secure Luter. Miami, of course, will now get a good look at “the one who got away” in Week 1 when the Dolphins face his team team, the Raiders.
Luter is a 2023 fifth-round draft choice by the San Francisco 49ers. The 26-year old cornerback came by way of South Alabama and logged his first three NFL starts of his career in 2025 for the San Francisco 49ers. It may be too fast of a turnaround to expect Luter to start for the Raiders in Week 1 — that will be here before we know it. But it will be worth keeping an eye on his performance this season with the Raiders, as every transaction can tell us more about Miami’s new front office. This was one they almost had. But they’ll need to “settle” for seven claims instead of eight.
