Packers may not be done searching for answers at QB after front office has plans to explore more options
Green Bay will work out UFL MVP quarterback Jack Plummer as the team explores developmental QB options.
The Green Bay Packers might not be fully satisfied with their quarterback situation. Next week, the team will work out UFL MVP quarterback Jack Plummer, a signal that the front office is still searching for the right developmental piece behind Jordan Love and Tyrod Taylor.
Plummer went undrafted in 2024 and spent some time with the Carolina Panthers before falling out of the NFL entirely. He didn’t play in the league in 2025 and hasn’t been signed by any team in 2026. But in the United Football League this year, Plummer was the best player in the league. He earned MVP honors, led the UFL in passing yards, and made the All-UFL team while playing for the Orlando Storm.
The Packers are still looking for alternatives at QB
The workout doesn’t mean Green Bay will necessarily sign Plummer, but the timing makes sense. Last week, the Packers traded quarterback Kyle McCord to the Miami Dolphins for a 2028 sixth-round pick. McCord had a strong preseason for the Packers, strong enough for the front office to trade him and recoup some draft capital.
After the trade, the Packers signed quarterback Kedon Slovis to the practice squad. Slovis spent training camp and the preseason with the Arizona Cardinals before Green Bay brought him in as the third-string option behind Love and Taylor. The Packers didn’t want to keep three quarterbacks on the 53-man roster, but having a talented player on the practice squad is something the organization values.
That said, trading McCord raised the bar for what Green Bay expects from its developmental quarterback. The Packers are still kicking the tires, and Plummer represents a potential upgrade if Slovis doesn’t offer what the coaching staff wants throughout the start of the regular season in practices.
Green Bay’s history with minor league quarterbacks
This isn’t the first time the Packers have considered quarterbacks from minor leagues. Back in 2023, Green Bay signed Alex McGough, who had been the MVP and a champion in the USFL. The UFL is a combination of the old USFL and the XFL, forming the best minor league in American football. The talent level is probably a step above the CFL and certainly well ahead of indoor leagues.
Having a third-string developmental player at the quarterback position is something head coach Matt LaFleur certainly values, and the Plummer workout shows the front office isn’t content to simply settle on its current depth chart.
