Packers make an unexpected final call on their developmental QB situation after a surprising turn of events
Green Bay will sign QB Kedon Slovis to the practice squad as a third-string quarterback behind Jordan Love and Tyrod Taylor.
The Green Bay Packers have made a decision on their quarterback situation, signing quarterback Kedon Slovis to the practice squad. The 25-year-old will serve as the third quarterback on the roster behind Jordan Love and Tyrod Taylor, replacing Kyle McCord, who spent the preseason in Green Bay before being traded to the Miami Dolphins for a 2028 sixth-round pick. While Will Levis was potentially a higher-ceiling option, the Packers decided to go with a lesser-known piece.
Slovis played college football at USC, Pittsburgh, and BYU. He went undrafted in 2024 and has spent time with the Indianapolis Colts, Houston Texans, and Arizona Cardinals. Green Bay got a firsthand look at him when he played against the Packers in Friday night’s final preseason game, completing 21 of 35 passes for 223 yards, one touchdown, two interceptions, and two sacks for a 64.3 passer rating.
“Kedon Slovis is going to come in,” general manager Brian Gutekunst confirmed. “He’s going to be our practice squad quarterback. He was in Arizona this past preseason and did a lot of really good things. It’s exciting to get him.”
Slovis showed promise in the preseason
Despite that uneven performance against the Packers, Slovis put together a solid preseason overall for Arizona. He completed 63.9% of his passes for 434 yards, two touchdowns, and two interceptions across four games. The Cardinals had that extra contest because of the Hall of Fame game. According to PFF, Slovis earned an 83.6 offensive grade, bolstered by his ability as a runner. He posted an 82.3 passer rating in the preseason with four big-time throws and just one turnover-worthy play.
Slovis has only two regular season dropbacks to his name, though, both coming with Arizona last season, when he completed one pass on two attempts for minus-2 yards.
In Arizona, Slovis spent his time playing under head coach Mike LaFleur, the younger brother of Packers coach Matt LaFleur. The two run a similar system, which should make the transition smoother for Slovis as he adapts to a new environment.
The McCord trade to Miami opened up the necessity for another practice squad quarterback, and Gutekunst expressed confidence in the organization’s ability to develop young players like Slovis.
“It’s not just quarterbacks,” Gutekunst added. “I feel really good about our player development as a whole, really good about our culture, that we’re able to bring players in here and that we’re going to give them the best opportunity to move forward and have success. I really do. I think that’s one of our strengths. And again, it’s not just quarterbacks. I think it’s across the board.”
That development track record is central to why Green Bay feels comfortable bringing in a quarterback with minimal regular season experience. Slovis showed enough during the preseason to warrant an opportunity, and the schematic familiarity with the LaFleur system gives him a head start that most practice squad options wouldn’t have.
