Former Bills head coach Sean McDermott joined The Rich Eisen Show this week and offered some praise for new Buffalo head coach Joe Brady, who previously served as McDermott’s offensive coordinator. 

McDermott sounded optimistic about Brady’s future in Buffalo, but he also took a moment to pat himself on the back. 

The former Bills head coach pointed out how he elevated the Buffalo job and suggested that Brady will have an easier path because he isn’t inheriting a rebuild situation like many new NFL head coaches face.

“There’s not many (coaches) that come into a job basically standing at the doorstep and knocking on the door of the Super Bowl,” said McDermott. “When I came into the job, there was a 17-year playoff drought. Most coaches come into a job where the organization is sick or unhealthy in some way. Joe’s coming into a job in a unique fashion, and I think they are well positioned.

“And listen, I know Joe is going to do a phenomenal job. He spent four years in our building, and that’s an advantage in and of itself. I have all the confidence in Joe Brady moving forward for the Buffalo Bills.”

Sean McDermott is right, but why he did make it about himself?

What McDermott said isn’t wrong. He did elevate the Bills during his time leading the franchise.

But McDermott could never quite get the Bills over the hump. That’s why he’s doing interviews on The Rich Eisen Show on Fridays instead of preparing for the start of the season.

Winning in the NFL is hard every year regardless of the state of the franchise. Brady has a great situation in front of him with quarterback Josh Allen and an organization that knows how to win its division. There’s no denying that it’s a good situation.

Still, it’s a new year, and the Bills have to go out and prove it all over again. Nothing that happened in the past guarantees them any success in the future. McDermott knows that as well as anyone.
