No one can quit one comparison in particular for Miami Hurricanes star Malachi Toney
Everyone’s running with a pro comparison for Miami Hurricanes WR Malachi Toney — even though he’s two full college seasons away from eligibility.
I can’t imagine very many people had a better weekend than Miami Hurricanes star wide receiver Malachi Toney. Toney, a star sophomore, was back with a vengeance on Friday night against the Stanford Cardinal. In all, it was 12 touches for 234 yards and three scores.
It has the whole football world buzzing — even the draft circle. Toney isn’t eligible for the NFL Draft until 2028, but that won’t stop anyone from getting the hype train rolling. And there seems to be an overwhelming favorite for a pro comparison for the Canes’ sensation. It’s one that South Florida fans will know well.
The Malachi Toney comparison no one can quit is former Miami Hurricanes WR Santana Moss
Santana Moss never really put up Malachi Toney numbers during his four seasons with the Miami Hurricanes. Toney is less than two dozen catches away from surpassing Moss’s entire college production, as a point of reference. But the profiles certainly have similarities.
Moss was 5-foot-10, 181 pounds and blazed a 4.31s 40-yard dash at the 2001 NFL Combine. Toney isn’t projected to run quite as fast but his explosiveness is undeniable and the projection to the NFL should have plenty of overlap. We’ve seen names like Jon Gruden and Robert Griffin III make the same comparison this past year, too. Moss finished his 14-year NFL career with 732 receptions for 10,283 yards, and 66 receiving touchdowns — plus an additional 3 scores on returns.
You can dream for bigger numbers from Toney, especially in today’s day and age. The passing offenses are more prolific. Space is easier to find. But that is a conversation for another day. Even if the football world can’t help trying to have it now.
