Las Vegas Raiders make some peculiar salary cap moves with new players on their roster, and the timing tells a story
The Las Vegas Raiders may have something up their sleeve after making some salary cap moves.
The Las Vegas Raiders made a pair of salary cap moves Thursday morning, and the timing has plenty of people wondering what comes next.
Per Spotrac, the Raiders converted $6 million of linebacker Quay Walker’s salary and signing bonus, added two voided years, and created $4.8 million of 2026 cap space. Walker signed a three-year, $40 million free agent contract with Las Vegas this past March.
But that wasn’t it. The Raiders also converted $4.285 million of wide receiver Jalen Nailor’s salary into a signing bonus, added two void years, and created $3.4 million of 2026 cap space. Nailor signed a three-year, $35 million contract in March as well. Combined, that’s $8.2 million in new cap room created from two players who just signed deals six months ago.
Something feels like it could be brewing
It’s clear the Raiders are making room for something. Does that mean they’re going to sign a free agent? It doesn’t guarantee it, but it kind of feels that way. It kind of feels like Las Vegas is clearing cap space so it can add to its roster and still be in a good spot salary cap-wise.
That said, there’s another possibility. The Raiders could simply be getting this out of the way because these restructures were always going to have to happen at some point. They could just be trying to feel better about their overall cap situation heading into the regular season. But given that both Walker and Nailor signed their contracts in March, the urgency of restructuring them now raises eyebrows.
Wide receiver makes the most sense
There’s been a lot of speculation about what position Las Vegas would target if it were looking to bring in a free agent, and one sticks out above the rest: wide receiver. Klint Kubiak has talked relentlessly about this team needing a wide receiver to step up. Whether that happens internally remains to be seen.
But with tight end Brock Bowers now out for at least Week 1 and possibly Week 2, with Dont’e Thornton Jr. sidelined for the first four weeks of the season, and with the wide receiver room underperforming throughout preseason, something has to give if this team wants a chance at becoming competitive and possibly pushing for a wild card spot.
There aren’t a ton of impact wide receivers available in free agency right now. None who would dramatically move the needle. But that doesn’t mean Vegas isn’t exploring options. There’s Tyreek Hill, DeAndre Hopkins, Curtis Samuel, Darius Slayton, and a few others, but those are the headliners.
The Raiders could also be looking at the defensive end position. Keyron Crawford is now out for the year, and the depth along the defensive line looks worse because of it. Las Vegas could be clearing cap space for any free agent it believes would make the roster better right now, regardless of position.
Hard to predict, but worth watching
It’s hard to predict exactly what’s going to happen, and it’s premature to say these moves guarantee the Raiders are about to make a splash. They don’t mean anything on their own. But are they fishy? Do they make you start thinking? Yes.
Either way, general manager John Spytek has earned the benefit of the doubt. He’s been impressive in his second year running the front office, and he clearly has a plan. Now it’s just a matter of sitting back and waiting to see what that plan is.
