Ahmed Hassanein looked destined for a Week 1 role after his summer, while another former second-round pick finds himself watching from the sideline.
The Detroit Lions have put out their inactives for the first game of the season against the New Orleans Saints and there are some surprises in here for sure.
Ahmed Hassanein a healthy scratch
This one is obviously the shocker here. Hassanein had been doing so well all summer and was really showing up as a pass rusher and big end in training camp and during the preseason. Still, the Lions are sitting him in this one. We’ll have to get some clarification post-game to see if an illness or injury popped up. He seemed almost assuredly someone who would be on the field today.
Not looking good for Rakestraw
At the end of the summer I did not have Rakestraw on my 53-man roster for the Lions, but he wound up making it. Still, the Lions are sitting him in this game as a healthy scratch and going with the rest of the gang. That’s not a great look and sometimes can be a signal for things to come. We’ll keep a close eye on him the rest of the way. It’s only Week 1.
Lions looking like they’re taking their time with Rolder
I would not at all be concerned about Rolder not playing. He’s only been back for a week and the Lions usually like to give guys a couple week buffer coming back from injuries. I wouldn’t be shocked if he plays Thursday.
